Jankovic bids California farewell
Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva suffered shock defeats in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The second and third seeds, making their first appearances of the week after receiving byes past the first round, were dumped out by unheralded teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia and Czech Petra Cetkovska respectively.
Jankovic appeared totally out of sorts as she slumped 6-4 6-4 to the world number 42.
“I’m struggling in this moment to find my game overall and find the confidence on the court,” she said.
“I’m not at my level. That’s the case. I’m trying to find that game and trying to come back into the form. But I’m struggling at the moment.
“I wish I had a magic stick and could just fix my game and just start playing awesome tennis again. I would like it to be that way, but sometimes it’s not.”
Went to pieces
Dementieva’s serving demons returned with a vengeance as she sent down 14 double faults during her 7-6 2-6 6-1 loss.
The Russian started the year in sensational form, winning in Auckland and Sydney before reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
But she double-faulted eight times as she lost the opening set in the tie-break and although she hit back well to level she went to pieces again in the deciding set, and blamed her early season schedule for the defeat.
“I just think my mind wasn’t there,” she said. “I was not really excited about playing this match and I just didn’t play at all.
“I think I should not have come here because I did not have enough time to recover after playing so many matches at the beginning of the year. I needed a much longer break to get ready to play at my best.”
Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic overcame an early wobble against qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus before edging through 6-4 6-3.
The world number seven was broken early as she quickly found herself 3-0 down, but won 12 of the next 16 games to ultimately run out an impressive winner as she got the defence of her title under way.
“It was just a case of committing and going for some shots that I would maybe do in practice,” Ivanovic said.
“Just trying to get some confidence and also experimenting a little bit with my game, because I haven’t played many competitive matches.”
